English Language Program at Chester Academy

At Chester Academy, our English Language (EL) Program is designed to provide additional support to English Learners (ELs) as they engage with the general education curriculum. EL students are held to the same high academic standards as their peers, and our program is built to help them succeed.

Our dedicated EL teacher offers targeted instruction to develop students’ social and academic English across all four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Instruction is aligned with grade-level content, helping students access and master classroom learning while building their language proficiency.

Program Goals

Our English Language Program is guided by the following goals:

  • Develop Academic English: EL students will acquire age-appropriate academic English in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as measured by the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs assessment.
  • Build Social Communication Skills: Students will gain the conversational English needed to interact effectively with peers, teachers, and school staff, measured through teacher observation and WIDA ACCESS assessments.
  • Support Content Learning: ELs will receive support to understand and engage with grade-level content across subjects.
  • Engage Families: We actively support EL families in becoming connected and engaged members of the school community.
  • Promote Academic Achievement: Our goal is for EL students to perform at levels comparable to their native English-speaking peers on classroom and standardized assessments.

We are committed to ensuring that every English Learner at Chester Academy has the tools, support, and confidence needed to thrive academically and socially.
